The Truth About Cats and Dogs in Black and White

Truth is just one person's reality. Here is mine in black and white (maybe some shades of gray). This blog has little to do with Cats or Dogs - just humourous sarcastic antics about my life or occasionally, someone else's. You know, intercepting volleyballs with my face, egg dropping, etc. The truth has seen some changes and in fluidity with change expect to see more artistic expressions posting up - so give your two cents worth!

Clean Bill of Dental Health

So, I went to the dentist today. I was expecting a bad report. You see, I get up and sit at a computer, travelling the route via the coffee machine. So... sometimes... the morning brushing gets postphoned. Except, when I remember, I figure - well I'm just going to have another cup of coffee - so why bother. Next thing I am in bed and realise damn, I didn't brush my teeth. Well, this sounds all well and gross, but then I brush extra long.

So, Mr. dentist cleaned em up and shipped me out with a clean bill of dental health. And my apparent receding gums are not that bad according to him, although he liked that I switched to sensitive toothpaste. Now here is the part I did not know. Since when did they decide "figure eight" brushing was the way to go. No up and down, that's nothing new but no side to side either. This means I am going to have to concentrate while brushing and remember to switch direction.

Yet another discovery was made as well. When people ask if I have my wisdom teeth I reply that I have no clue, never noticed. So today, like a dental moron, I asked. I do have one wisdom tooth with no sign of the others. A more highly evolved creature than most it seems. Although are we surprised? So, the moral of the story is... although my inadequate brushing schedule did not lead to any dental disaster, it obviously hasn't helped my social life either, that is of course should I actually leave my house/thesis long enough to actually need to make a good first impression.

A Beautiful Ugly Day!

To Peter and Brenda, the night was a blast;
for Brenda and Peter, a day come at last.
Although it was not fit for weasel or car,
they travelled in droves, from near and from far.
There was slush on the roads and a chill in the air
but it didn't stop us from showing we care.
There were laughs all around, some with and some at
and it wasn't hard to see that their love was all that.
With Bruce Wayne in the house, Sonny and Cher and Faith Hill,
we danced to our Hearts Content and ate to our Heart's Delight.
Now my rhyming is imperfect, but not so was this day,
The sun shining inside all of us, not one sky of gray.
Who will be next? Dressed in black or in white?
Will it be Sarah or Shane, Bradley or Mi-ke -(cah)?
Only time will tell, but for now let us say
Congratulations to Peter and Brenda for surviving their big day!

A Million and One

I am now down to 6 weeks to finish my thesis. So far so okay. I also have a wedding this Friday (not mine obviously). Little Peter's. And I am hosting a two-year old's birthday party (also not mine obviously - the child or party). So I may not be as astute in my posting as usual.

Define Yourself

So let me ask you a question...What do you do? You must have been asked this question before... at a family gathering, a class reunion, a seedy nightclub, in line at the grocery store, in your favourite IM space. And what was your answer? Honestly?

A recent post "Quote" by the newly self-proclaimed Dancing Queen prompted me to post on something that I believe deeply and passionately. While the quote has a very obvious and good-willed moral I'm going to reflect on those first five words..."you are not your job." Now I know Laurie well, well fairly well and we have been going through our "jobs are getting us down" phase, which, I expect may have prompted the optimistic-flavoured quote post.

I studied Recreation back in the day, which included leisure studies. Now, stop laughing, and start taking me seriously again. We often got flack for the nature of our profession by people who can't take leisure seriously and why should they - its leisure, recreation. So what does this have to do with the question at hand, What do you do? Simple, most people tend to identify with their job, primarily or career, secondly. For example, primary response "I am a Heritage Interpreter" or secondary response "I work in the social sciences." But why not answer with what really defines us - the actions we have the "freedom to" choose that gives us the "freedom from" our other worldly obligations. For example, "Hmmm...what do I do...well I love spending a lot of time outdoors." or "I often love to bbq and listen to great music on the deck."

It is actually quite difficult to define who we are by something other than our work environments. I suppose if your job were professional surfer it may be different. But there is so much more to us then what we get paid to do between 9 and 5 (generalising), what really makes us tick. If you can't figure out the answer then you have lost yourself in the rungs of the capitalist ladder, suffered the truest case of identity theft, sold the essence of you to the highest bidder. So here is my challenge job-centric blog goers - what do you do?

Flip flop Flip flop Flip flop

Since I dove nose and teeth into my thesis I have forgotten, well not really forgotten, more like neglected the fact that I am (sometimes) a girlie girl and therefore have needs. My eyebrows have gone to the wayside, surely not a priorty or job clinching assest but nonetheless they are important. Unruly eyebrows can be the stake through the heart of one's overall presentation. No need to become unsettled, intervention has begun and the eyebrows are doing quite well. Coming up on Thursday, you will be delighted to hear, that my hair will be receiving some much overdo attention. Yes, just a reminder that I am female, in case it has been forgotten. Oh and by the way, I wore flip flops today. Hmmm mental note... schedule pedicure.

How do I hate thee (thesis)...

Let me count the ways. First there is the way one hates to wake up in the morning only to plunk'er down in front of the smart-alec laptop, obviously smarter than any of us or even all of us. Then there is the way the hips widen and the tummy softens after multiple cookies binges and candy meltdowns. Let's not forget the impending caffeine addiction, and god help you should you forget to restock before the bean supply should exhaust itself. And naturally there is the way one misses her life, when she was interesting, and alive, and social, and ventured outside the confines of her house. Then there is the guilt, oh yes, out damn spot, the guilt of doing anything but working towards the completion of the dreaded object of your hatred. Do you think I am finished? Finished. Now there is a concept that looms drearily over ones head. Finished. As if it were a race between the tortoise and the hare. One would hope to be the tortoise slow and steady and victorious, while the napping rabbit, concedes the race but the reality is we all take naps. No I could go on, and on, and on... just like my procrastination attempts but I think I would prefer to nap or maybe get a snack.

Oh the randomness...

If Laurie gets to do a second one, then so do I. How is it that randomness elicits such accuracy? Remember, randomness is the foundation for statistics.

Man before the times

Last evening I watched the 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Morrow. It paled in comparison to the 1997 version, which was far darker and creepier. This one was a little hokey in places. This one hardly warrants a "horror" genre assignment. But I'm not much into movie reviews - I leave that for the experts like Laurie. However, I sometimes visit a place called IMDB for extra information. After the movie, I went in search of the answer to "I'm sure this is based on someone classics famous novel, isn't it?" Indeed it was. H.G. Wells - another round for the Brits, bartender! I stumbled across his life story - and went to bed in awe of this man - a soothsayer no less mystical and colourful than one from a Shakespeare Tragedy. This is what IMDB had to say about him that caught enough of my interest to warrant a post.
H.G. Wells (1866-1946)
  • H.G. Wells, born in Bromley, UK in 1866, his literary career began in 1895 with the publication of his first novel, "The Time Machine."
  • Until this first success his life had been a patchwork drapery and chemist apprenticeships interrupted by stints as a teacher's assistant, and eventually studied biology at London's Normal School of Science under Darwin's "bull dog," the great T.H. Huxley.
  • The 1890's saw the publication of the "scientific romances" that were to make him the most successful author of his time: "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1896), "The Invisible Man" (1897), "The War of the Worlds" (1898), "When the Sleeper Wakes" (1899), and "The First Men in the Moon" (1901).
  • He turned his writing to social topics, history, and even prophecy with books like "Anticipations" (1901), "The Discovery of the Future" (1902), "Mankind in the Making" (1903), "The Future in America" (1906), "The War in the Air" and "New Worlds for Old" (1908), "What is Coming" (1916), "War and the Future" (1917), "The Salvaging of Civilisation" (1921), "The Open Conspiracy" (1928), "The Shape of Things to Come" (1933), and "The New World Order" (1939).
  • A revolutionary in thought and deed, Wells was often the subject of public controversy owing to his attitude on so-called "free love" and women's rights.
  • Cheated on his wives repeatedly. He even demanded of his second wife the "right" to take lovers. Wells may have fathered up to five children out of wedlock. His first wife, Isabel, was the daughter of his father's cousin.
  • He was a life-long believer in Socialism - the means to mankind's ultimate social salvation. His brand had nothing to do with Marxism and brought him conflict with other leading Socialist thinkers of his day during his brief stint with The Fabian Society.
  • The outbreak of the WWI found Wells changing his mind to support this Great War against the "Blood and Iron" Imperial aggression. He reacted by writing the 1914 anti-war and pacifist pamphlet entitled "The War That Will End War." Its title became proverbial almost instantly and is used to refer to the First World War even today.
  • Even before the Great War began he published "The World Set Free" early in 1914. It was a prophetic novel about a world war against Imperial Germany and her "Central European Allies" which included a remarkably accurate forecast of atomic warfare and even coined the term "atomic bomb." He was among the first to call for a post war League of Nations but was bitterly disappointed with and critical of the actual League that developed.
  • He spent the early part of the 1920's writing "The Outline of History," which like so many of his previous works was also enormously successful on both sides of the Atlantic.
  • The 1930's found H.G. profoundly disturbed by the rising of nationalism from Nazi Germany and Fascism in Italy. His critical writings of Imperial Germany and outright vicious attacks on Adolf Hitler and his accomplices earned H.G. Wells the distinction of having his "anti-German" books burned during book bonfires at German universities. The name "H.G. Wells" appeared near the top of a list of those intellectuals and politicians slated for immediate liquidation upon the invasion of Britain by the Nazis.
  • He died quietly at home on 13 August 1946. In any appraisal the 20th century, H.G. Wells must be considered among its very most important and influential thinkers and authors.

At the dawn of the industrialisation revolution, long before the technological and nano-technological ages, H.G. Wells invented genetic engineering, the atomic bomb, time travel, and extraterrestrial invasions. He saw the future on such an enlightened vision that he was indeed centuries ahead of his time. It is frightfully clear that he did not write in the fictitious genre in which he was placed. Perhaps he travelled time himself and saw the progression of human societies but his epitaph unquestionably says it best, "God damn you all, I told you so."

Greatest female superheros of all time

Laurie, you may particularly like this post. I am a big fan of superheros. I grew up watching the original superfriends and at age 4 had a Wonderwoman birthday party. Coincidentally, I am wearing a Wonderwoman belt today. So here is my personal list in reverse order of greatness of the greatest female superheros of all time. These were not easy decisions but in the end...no one rivals a DC superhero.

Honourable mentions: The Phoenix (Jean Grey) - Jean Grey possessed telepathic powers enabling her to read minds, project her thoughts into the minds of others, initiate astral travel, and mentally stun opponents with pure psionic force, among other talents. She also possessed telekinesis, allowing her to levitate and manipulate objects and others, generate force fields, fly, and stimulate heat molecules to generate concussive blasts. The Snowbird (Narya) - Snowbird can mystically assume the form of a female human being, as well as that of any animal native to northern Canada, gaining each animal's special abilities. If she holds an animal shape for too long, her personality may become animalistic. Snowbird also has mystical senses that allow her to detect magical energies, sense the presence of great mystical evil, and achieve limited postcognition. Furthermore, Snowbird possesses superhuman strength and is capable of flight, Former RCMP.

Number 3. Teela (excerpt adapted from Master of the Universe Series Guide). "Headstrong and independent in her own right, Teela is an attractive, quick witted memeber of the royal guard." Teela's duty is to keep watch over the unruly Prince Adam. Daughter of Man-at-Arms and the Sorceress of Eternia, she is resourceful, a master a martial arts, and exceptionally skilled with a freeze ray. Teela is not the least bit interested in Prince Adam as she only has eyes for his alter-ego He-Man. Who met in an exchange of lifesaving rescues - it was love at first sight - for both. She is blue-eyed red head.

Number 2. Batgirl/Oracle. (adapted from DC Comics). Barbara Gordon is the adopted daughter of Commissioner Gordon. A brilliant graduate of Gotham University, she admired the city's resident vigilante Batman and donned a homemade batgirl costume to the policeman's masquerade where she foiled the Killer Moth's attack on Batman. This started her new life as a compatriot to Batman and Robin. The Joker's bullet brought her high flying career as batgirl to an end but despite paralysis, she has accomplished more as a wheelchair-bound crime fighter than she could ever have as batgirl. And this is just the beginning. In her time as batgirl, she served the U.S. Congress, and after her near fatal run-in with the joker she packaged her skills as an information retreival expert under the name Oracle. Combined with her super-hacking skills, possess a photographic memory and hand-to-hand combat, she became known as a legend in the superhero world and recruited heros to act on her data - the birds of prey. She is 5'11, 148 lbs, and a red head with blue eyes.

Number 1. Wonder Woman (Adapted from DC Comics). "Wise as Athena, stronger than Herucles, swift as Hermes, and as beautiful as Aphrodite, Wonder Woman is Princess Diana, champion of Themyscira, the home of the immortal Amazons." She was scupted by clay by her mother Queen Hippolyta and brought to life by the Olympics Gods. She has travelled through time and space, she has been killed by demonfire, and resurrected on Olympus. She can fly at sublight speed, highley resistent to body harm, she can psyhically communicate with animnals, she is an expert in all forms of classical armeed and unarmed combat, a master of the sword, ax and bow and arrow, a skilled tactician and diplomat. Her arsenal includes a magic lasso that forces anyone within its confines to tell the absolute truth and her bracelets deflect bullets...and lets not forget about the invisible jet.

Years later, after becoming mortal and forsaking her royal title she donned the robes of amazon ambassador, not only to the UN but to societies around the world, authored a controversial book recording her observations. Born a princess on an island of immrtal women created by the gods themselves, Wonder Woman has become a legend in the galaxy. Her mission is clear, promote peace, love and, equality, while defending the innocent from the forces of evil. She is premiere member of the Justice League of America and rumoured to be carrying superman's child. She is 6ft, 165 lbs, with black hair and blue eyes. Where is our Wonder Woman?

Music comes to Canada

Last night was the Canadian annual culmination of musical acheivement - The Junos. I was beyond disappointed. The sound quality was poor at best. Multi-directional mics picking up oodles of background noise and "fan"fare. You couldn't even detect the mumblings of the omnipresent voice of introduction. Now, a Junos rant can not be complete without comments on the hosting stylings of Miss Anderson...booed in her opening anti-sealing comments, perhaps her tone would change if seal blubber could be marketed as a natural breast implant. But it wasn't a night about politics or science, it was a night about the greatest and oldest of all arts...no not eroticism, Music. It's all about Canadian music...except for the Black-eyed Peas who tied with Coldplay for international album of the year.

Why is it that the greatest night in Canadian Music boasted the off-key stylings of Broken Social Scene, Massari, and Hedley (whom are fantastic but sounded awful last night - Jacob Hogarth is a King). Now there were some musical highlights...the Black-eyed Peas must have brought their own equipement on the bus as the sound drastically and briefly improved. My other musical hightlight would have to be Divine Brown, who should really be getting a hell of a lot more recognition for her musical gift, I don't even like the song that much but man can she sing.

So how about awards? We gain a little more credibility in this department. There was some truly great and deserving Juno winners. Bryan Adams, a beautifully ageing man was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Michael Buble took home 4 of the Junos best: Single of the Year, Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Pop Album of the Year. A truly remarkable year for this talent who is reminiscent of a Sinatra or a Connick and has the voice of an angel. The crooner took top awards edging out more popular musical genres. New artist of the year, Daniel Powter, is one of those boys you want singing to you under your window.
